Scripture Theme

Opening Song: Book of Mormon Stories

Prayer

Sing "Search, Ponder, and Pray"

I had my scriptures out and told Canden that I loved the scriptures. That they taught me about Jesus, that they are the words of God through the prophets, and that we learn through the scriptures how to return to live with Heavenly Father again and be happy.

We then looked through my scriptures to see all the highlights. He liked looking at the maps/pictures. Then we picked a couple of highlighted versus and I told him that those were parts of the scriptures that I particularly loved and explained what they taught.

We then looked through his scriptures (summarized Bible and Book of Mormon stories) and he could tell me stories that he liked by looking at the pictures.

By default, we learned that we should respect and love our scriptures and not jump up and down on them during family home evening :).

Bear testimony of the scriptures. (You can find ideas in refs below).

Adam and Eve

Honestly, this lesson was not as structured as my other lessons, but I found a few things helpful.

I basically just taught the scripture story of Adam and Eve and the fall. I used the picture of them from the Gospel Art book to refer to as I told the story. One point I emphasized is that even though they partook of the fruit, God said that if they would obey him from then on then they could have joy. God wants us to obey so we can be happy. Also, Adam and Eve taught their children about God and the things that are found in the scriptures so they could learn to live with God again. (There's another picture of them teaching their children in the Gospel Art book).

I found the primary manual helpful while preparing. There are several lessons based around the story of Adam and Eve.

FHE Rotation

Jared and I have decided to rotate through different types of FHE lessons each month, so if you're following this blog, you will start to see the pattern.

The four lesson types are
Scripture Story
Gospel Principle
Preach My Gospel
Family/Church History

There's no certain order to which we do each week so long as we cover each subject each month. We plan out the lessons a month in advance. It's worked well for us because by planning, we then get to both be a part and have input on what we feel is important for our family to learn. Because FHE is carried out on Monday night when Jared is away traveling, it makes it so nice that he gets to at least be a part of the planning process. Often, I have him call at a certain point in our lesson so he can tell a story, or bear testimony, or even just ask Canden what he learned.
