I'm Trying To Be Like Jesus

Opening Song

Prayer

Show picture of Jesus with the children. Talk about how Jesus shows us love and wants us to be happy. Review who Jesus loves (mommy, daddy, each child, friends by name, etc).

Use scripture with Christ asking us to follow him. 2 Nephi 31:12 might be a good one, "Follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do."

Explain that Jesus was nice, uses a nice voice, does not hurt people, but shows them love. Explain that we want to be like Jesus.

Learn and practice the song: I'm Trying To Be Like Jesus.

Let child draw or color pictures on a piece of paper that will help him remember the words to the song. (eg. heart - love, mouth - say, grumpy face - make a wrong choice, ear - listen, etc.) When older, can also learn sign language to the song.

Mom and Dad and Heavenly Father Love Me

Opening song: The Usual

Prayer

Give Canden a big hug and kiss. Have him sit on lap while explain how much Dad and I love him.
Story: Tell a story of when a boy made a mistake and was afraid his mommy wouldn't love him anymore, but how his mom made sure he knew she would ALWAYS love him.

(See Behold Your Little Ones, Lesson 1) Use felt board pictures (Heavenly Father and Jesus, people, clouds) to show that everyone used to live in Heaven with Heavenly Father long ago. Heavenly Father is our father. We are all his children. We were a great big family and were all brothers and sisters. We loved each other. Heavenly Father loved us so much. Then Heavenly Father sent us to Earth and even though we can't live with him while we're on earth, he still loves us so much. He is still our Father. He wants us to be happy. (Maybe sing "If You're Happy and You Know It".)

Heavenly Father sends us blessings. He asks us to say thank you for those blessings. He also asks us to share our blessings. He also asks us to come talk to him in prayer so he can tell us how much he loves us.

How do we show Heavenly Father we love him? (Prayer, Reverence, Loving Others because they are Heavenly Father's children, too)

Story: May want to read You Are Special (Punchinello story - I HIGHLY suggest this be in your collection at home. If you don't have it, let me know, and I may have just found cousin Christmas presents next year.)

I can be like Jesus by showing love for my neighbors.

Opening Song - the usual

Prayer

Read and have Canden repeat the scripture, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Explain what that means? Who is Jesus talking about when he says, neighbor? Is _____ our neighbor? Is ______ our neighbor? (We need to love and care for people and make them feel good. Every person we come in contact with is our neighbor.)

Show pictures of Jesus loving neighbors (I used him healing the blind man [nursery manual] and him washing the disciples' feet [picture book]):
Who is in both of these pictures?
Which one of these pictures has a man who is sick?
Which picture shows Jesus serving his friend?
Where are Jesus' neighbors?
Which picture has Jesus showing love?
How can we show love? (turn to picture of children sharing)

Story from the Friend (Feb 1974):

“Happy birthday, Heber!” exclaimed his mother as she handed him the most beautiful coat he had ever seen. He hugged it close and his eyes were bright with happiness. He knew how difficult it had been for his mother to make it, and he could hardly wait to go out in the cold and feel its warmth around him.

One day as Heber was hurrying on an errand, he saw a boy in a thin sweater shivering with cold. As he hurried by, the boy looked at Heber’s coat with such longing that, almost before he knew what he was doing, Heber stopped, took off his new coat, and gave it to the boy.

When Heber’s mother saw her son wearing his old coat instead of the new one, she asked what he had done with his lovely new overcoat.

“Oh, Mother,” Heber J. Grant explained, “I saw a boy who needed it lots worse than I, so I gave it to him.”

Closing Song: I'm trying to be like Jesus

Prayer

Can play "ladder to Heaven" game and use questions involving loving our neighbors. The game is just a picture of the earth with board game spaces leading up to a cloud with Heavenly Father and Jesus and their kingdom to show us returning to live with Heavenly Father again.
